Contributory Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 884 and 864)

If an older parent’s kid is a qualified New Zealand citizen, an Australian citizen, or an Australian permanent resident, they may be able to live in Australia under the contributing aged parent visa (subclass 884 and 864).

For a period of two years, applicants may reside in Australia with the contributing aged parent 884 visa. There is no way to renew or extend this visa. Parents may apply for the permanent Contributory Aged Parent 864 visa before the temporary 884 visa expires if they wish to remain in Australia permanently.

Subclass 884 Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa

This temporary visa lets the aged parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen stay temporarily in Australia.

From 1 July 2023, changes to Australian citizenship eligibility for some New Zealand citizens holding a Special Category (subclass 444) (SCV) visa will apply. See Direct pathway to Australian citizenship for New Zealand citizens.

Eligibility

You cannot apply if you currently hold or have applied for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (subclass 870) visa.

Sponsorship Requirement:

This visa requires sponsorship from an eligible sponsor, typically an eligible child. If the child is under 18, sponsorship by an eligible relative or community organization is acceptable, subject to approval.

Age Requirement:

Applicants must be of an age eligible to receive the age pension in Australia.

No Further Stay Condition:

The current visa must not have a ‘no further stay’ condition.

Health, Character, and Values:

Fulfill health and character requirements, sign the Australian Values Statement if 18 or older, and have a debt-free record with the Australian Government. No history of visa cancellations or previous application refusals is allowed.

Two-Step Application for Permanent Visa (864):

Applicants holding a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) (subclass 884) visa can spread the cost over several years by applying in two steps.

Duration of Stay:

A temporary visa allowing a 2-year stay, with the period starting from the visa grant date.

Extension and Reapplication:

The visa cannot be extended or reapplied for. Alternative visa options are available.

Including Family:

Include family members in the application, providing details for all members, migrating or not. Partners’ information is required, even if they are not applying for the visa.

Cost and Installments:

The visa costs AUD33,895, with additional charges for accompanying family members. Payment is divided into two instalments, with an extra charge for each family member applying.

(Subclass 864) Contributory Aged Parent visa

This permanent visa lets the aged parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen stay in Australia.

Sponsor’s Death Exception:

In the event of your sponsor’s death, holders of a Temporary Contributory Aged Parent (subclass 884) visa may still be eligible for this visa.
