Tourist Stream (Apply in Australia)

Purpose: This visa allows you to visit Australia for tourism, to see family and friends, or for non-business or medical reasons.

Permitted Activities:

  • Study or training for up to 3 months (mainly for non-study purposes)

Restrictions:

  • No work allowed

Cruise Information: If entering Australia on a cruise, a visa is required. Round trip cruises do not reset stay periods; time spent on the cruise counts as time in Australia.

Duration: Temporary stay for a period specified in the visa grant letter, determined case by case based on purpose and length requested.

Multiple Entry Option: Visa may be granted with multiple entries or no travel. Exceptional circumstances needed for stays exceeding 12 consecutive months.

Extending Stay: Visa cannot be extended for a longer stay. Apply for a different visa for longer or permanent stays.

Including Family: Family members must submit separate applications; they can’t be included in the primary applicant’s application.

Application Details: Eligible applicants can apply in Australia; decision made when applicant is in Australia.

Tourist Stream (Apply Outside Australia)

Purpose: This visa allows you to visit Australia as a tourist, go on a cruise, or visit family and friends.

Permitted Activities:

  • Visit family and/or friends
  • Tourism, including cruises
  • Study or training for up to 3 months (mainly for non-study purposes)

Restrictions:

  • No work allowed

Cruise Information: A visa is required if entering Australia during a cruise. Round trip cruises do not reset stay periods.

Duration: Temporary stay for a period specified in the visa grant letter, determined case by case based on purpose and length requested.

Entry Options: Visa can be granted with a single entry or multiple entries. Generally, a stay period of 3 months is granted, but up to 12 months in certain circumstances.

Special Considerations:

No work allowed

Participate in conferences, trade fairs, or seminars (without payment by organizers)

Undertake tourist activities

Restrictions:

No work for or provision of services to an Australia-based business or organization

No direct selling of goods or services to the public

Alternative for Short-Term Work:

Consider applying for a temporary work visa if engaging in short-term work that doesn’t align with business visitor activities.

APEC Business Travel Card Holders:

ABTC holders may not need a separate visa if ‘AUS’ is printed on the back. ABTC holders (other than New Zealanders) might be granted a Visitor (subclass 600) Business Visitor stream visa for short-stay business or tourism activities.

Temporary visa with a stay period determined on a case-by-case basis. Generally, up to 3 months granted, with possibilities of up to 12 months in certain circumstances.

Extended Stay Details:

Obligation to depart Australia with the tour group before visa expiration

Duration:

Entry Options:

Multiple entry: Leave and re-enter Australia on the same visa while valid.

Family Inclusion:
